Marvels of China

 

In this hands-on, art-based workshop students explore the culture of China, focusing on symbolism, the importance of dragons, the story behind the Chinese Zodiac and aspects of life in Imperial China. Students can also work in teams to create their own mini terracotta warrior!

A special workshop for EYFS-KS2 children based in our Chinese gallery which includes a costumed re-telling of the story behind the Chinese Zodiac, making of animal masks and dragon banners or snappers, dragon dancing, making shadow puppets, and hearing about the defeat of Nian.

Turning Japanese

Turning Japanese

 

Students explore our Japanese gallery in this workshop learning about the culture of and life in this fascinating country. The children get the chance to learn about Samurai warriors, try their hand at origami and learn about symbolism. There is also the opportunity to combine this workshop with a trip to our nearby Botanic Garden to learn more about the influence of nature on Japanese art.

Signs and symbolism in art from around the world

Signs and Symbols

 

A cross gallery exploration of the use of signs and symbols in art from Japan, China, Near and Middle East, India and Tibet. The workshop also features the chance to create artwork inspired by the collections on display.

A chance to learn more about Islamic art and culture in this half day workshop which also allows students the chance to create their own artwork.

This workshop looks at the culture and beliefs prevalent in India and Tibet, making use of our dedicated gallery. The students focus on the different religions, the story of the Ramayana and the artwork from that region.
