Contemptibles	the title adopted by all members of the British Expeditionary Force who saw service before the 22nd November 1914
futility	ineffective or useless
Front	where the fighting was taking place
mobilised	get forces ready for action
revisionist	someone who advocates a revised theory, has a new way of looking at things
shrapnel shells	shells that contain spherical lead or iron shot that fly out when the shell explodes. They were capable of causing lots of injuries but were not very useful at destroying barbed wire.
supply lines	ways of transporting arms, food, and other materiel to where the fighting was taking place.
