Those of
us left behind were with the transport
at Petit Servins, and had a very
peaceful time.
We used to watch the various strafes which went
on on
the Vimy Ridge, which could be seen plainly
from Foug Servins, and things
were pretty lively
just then. Keddie was acting L F O while Sligo
was
on leave and Spence Picker & Stalker were
with Hutton in the line,
with Johnnie Walker &c
for instruction. Sometimes we went on to
the Bouvigny Heights from where you could see
north to Bethune and Hallach
and still further
to the low hills in the distance, and also south to
Arras and the flashes in the sky where the battle
of the Somme was beginning.
There was nothing to do
all day and much of the time was spent in writing
letters.
On the
night of July 1st the battalion came back
into support and "A"
Coy was in the Warren, with
"C" Coy further along on the right,
D Coy on the Arras
Road and "B" Coy in Carency where they
were nearly
all destroyed by a gas shell.
